My hog breeding story

8th November 2009

I currently have two litters of healthy hedgehogs all doing well. I never get tired of meeting new hoglets and playing with them. They each develop a little personality and it is lovely to see.

13th April 2009

I am very happy to announce that Indigo has had a lovely litter of hoglets. They are a week old and are just beautiful. I can't wait until they are old enough to come out and play!

28th November

My beautiful litter of hoglets have been gone for so long now, and although I still get to visit one of them regularly and am lucky enough to get updates on the other two, I can't wait to have hoglets in the nest again. I plan on mating Indigo and Huffle on 17th December (Indi's 6 mnth half birthday!) so am hopeful for hoglets in January! I also plan on mating Scarlet once Indigo has had her litter as she has had a lovely long rest and made such a good mummyhog last time.

25th August

The babies are all grown up now and going to their new homes at the weekend. They all have fantastic temperaments and are going to make wonderful pets... i'll be sad to see them go though :(

28th July

I have now been able to start handling the babies and managed to sex them, I have two boys and a girl.

23rd July

Well the babies are just over a week old now and all doing well. They are growing really fast and mum is doing great too. Only a few days until I can pick them up!

Update photo!

15th July 2008

Success! Scarlet has given birth to three cute pink squidgy hoglets with creamy baby spines. She's doing a fabulous job with them so far and I'm looking forward to seeing what sexes I have when they are old enough.

21st June 2008

Scarlet has gone into baby mode... in her head at least! It's impossible to know whether or not she is really pregnant or whether it is a phantom, but she is eating and drinking loads and coming out during the day to eat which is very unlike her! I have started weighing her so hopefully we will have a better idea soon as to whether or not she's pregnant.

11th June 2008

My mentor came over last night and the hoggies were fab. There was very little huffing during the initial meeting but Huffle was scared of Scarlet... who was in pursuit of him!

We sat on the floor for around an hour with no joy but no fighting. Hufflepuff annointed all over himself and Scarlet licked it off of him! Then after my mentor left and it got darker Huffle quite literally sprung into action! He was squeaking away and chasing Scarlet round the viv. They eventually got down to it and I left them to it, there was no huffing or barging throughout the mating and they both seem absolutely fine this morning - overall a great success, although Huff doesn't quite live up to his Dad's wooing reputation taking him over an hour to realise there was a female to pursue!

10th June 2008

Well Today is the day! Tonight I will be putting my hoggies together for the first time. They will stay together in Hufflepuff's home for a week and hopefully will make some gorgeous little hoglets together. They have both been bathed and checked over and appear to be in perfect health. Their vivariums have been cleaned out and they are all ready for my mentor's visit tonight!

 2nd May 2008

Going on the advice of other breeders I have decided to put my hogs together during the month of June providing of course that they are in good health when the time comes. Bonnie of Happy Hogs will hopefully be with me for the initial meeting to ensure that all goes smoothly and to help me out with what to expect with regards to the mating onwards.

I would like to thank Bonnie for her kind offer, it is lovely to meet people who care about the animals and enjoy educating others. I am also a member of a fab forum, which you can find via the Links page. This forum is full of experienced breeders who, like Bonnie are more than happy to give help and advice wherever they can. This gives me confidence knowing I have a strong support group on hand for any questions or worries.

28th April 2008

I am happy to say that the breeder of my first hog Hufflepuff has agreed to be my mentor and guide me through the breeding process. She has just had another litter which I have been to meet. This gave me the unique opportunity to experience handling very young hoglets and also to ask all of my questions. I had a wonderful time, baby hoglets are just the cutest things! I was able to ask loads of questions and now feel in a much better place to breed my hogs when they are old enough.

14th March 2008

At the moment my hoggies are too young to breed but I hope to mate them towards the end of the year providing they are healthy and suitable for breeding. I will be documenting this process below so please check back to see how I am doing.
